Reading, Writing and Wriggling

In 2004 the mixed Reception and Year 1 class at Old Bank Primary School in Mirfield took part in a year-long project with JABADAO introducing Developmental Movement Play as a routine part of their curriculum.

In a school that had been identified as having a very high level of temporary exclusions, the project aimed to improve particular children’s ability to cope with and enjoy school, building the best possible foundations for their future health.

A specialist movement practitioner spent one day per week in school for three terms, starting with one to one and pair activities and building up to small group work using a Developmental Movement Play approach. At the end of the year an exhibition about DMP was made with the children and other settings invited to its launch.
