Key Facts and Figures

Established in 1985 to ‘develop a new role for dancers in our society’ JABADAO is a charity and limited company. Key services include: research and development, user-led projects in education, health and social care settings, training and courses, publications, development of resources to support new practice, training, mentoring and supervision of specialist dancers.

We seek to achieve cultural and social change by influencing understanding, attitudes, practice and policy.

We are a user-led organization; the people with whom we work contribute to its development and evaluation at all stages.

Beginning as a Yorkshire-based project the work went national in 1994. In 1996 JABADAO became the National Centre for Movement, Learning and Health. JABADAO works with local authorities and practitioners in all nine government regions in England as well as in Scotland and Wales.

In 2006 – 07 alone, through training courses, JABADAO influenced the practice of 684 people, who in turn work regularly with 18,435 children or adults. A further 1271 people attended conferences or introductory sessions where JABADAO gave keynote addresses. Evaluation scores from those working with us averaged 9.1 out of 10 in 2006-07. In 1985 the total turnover was £32,000. In 2006 the turnover was £352,285. JABADAO employs a core team of eight staff, working with a team of nine practitioners across the UK.

There is an administrative base is in Leeds and a Development Centre in Ipswich, Suffolk. The Director was awarded an MBE in the 2001 New Year's Honour's list for services to dance.
