Developmental Movement Play
Developmental Movement Play: 0 – 6
Developmental Movement Play (DMP) is a new play-based way of supporting young children’s development through movement.
It draws on existing theories about the links between movement and the development of the brain and nervous system, explaining why movement is such an important part of young children’s lives. A simple theoretical framework combines this with understanding of the value of child-led play.
Crucially, it aims to support children’s natural desire to move – and move freely – helping adults to see that, in our increasingly sedentary culture we often get in children’s way, unwittingly undermining a natural and important developmental process.
Since 2002, 574 practitioners have trained on the Certificate Course and 400 settings have included a DMP approach within the everyday activities.
What practitioners have said following the course:
"I see differently now… it’s like having new eyes"
"I used to put the Physical Development area of
the curriculum last, but now I put it first.
I see that it underpins everything"
