Young People You Worry About
29 February 2008 Ipswich
A significant number of young people fail to thrive in the school environment. Many young people who we know to be positive, talented individuals have trouble accessing the curriculum and fitting within the way schools organise learning. This can lead to an unhelpful downward spiral that is hard to stop and painful to witness. Many of these young people are what we might describe as ‘kinesethetic learners’.
Over many years, we have researched the links between movement and learning and especially what children’s bodies need to build foundations for all that life throws at them. This day shares the research with those working in Secondary Education and asks if there are lessons to be learnt about ways to support young people – especially young people you worry about.
Together we will consider the concept of ‘kinesthetic learning’ in more depth and begin to develop new ways of supporting young people.
Who the day is for
Teachers and governors with responsibility for behaviour policies, community sports partnerships, PE teachers, teachers and education advisors with an interest in movement and/ or young people’s wellbeing.
Theory
Presentation of a simple theoretical framework exploring how the opportunities young people have for movement affect the way they learn: links between movement and learning – how we wire up our brains to enable us to access the curriculum some potential consequences if we don’t complete this wiring and the impact this might have on how we learn the biological drive to keep seeking the movement experiences that will allow us to wire up fully
Discussion and Practical
An opportunity to explore the ways in which schools might integrate some body and movement based strategies to support young people in social, emotional, physical and cognitive development
Consideration of how we might use movement strategies for young people who have trouble meeting the expectations of the classroom and find themselves in ‘isolation’ repeatedly as a result
As an alternative to sport, this day will offer games and activities that develop young people’s ability to feel their way through life
Facilitator – Penny Greenland
Director of JABADAO and a practitioner with wide experience of working with people of all ages and abilities. She will be joined on this day by other movement practitioners with differing experiences in schools using movement work, each of whom will contribute to a growing understanding of new strategies.
